Description:

I have been adopted and now have a lovely new home!

Offered for adoption is a simply gorgeous vintage mah jong game with a heavily inlaid and ornate case and highly desirable "flower pot" flowers.

I feel I need to start by reminding you I am not a photographer (I try very hard to pretend I am one) and this game, despite my best efforts, looks way better in person than the photographs!

Let's start with the case which has heavily inlaid designs on 3 sides and the top. The front panel shows a bird hidden amongst the blossom branchs all beautifully inlaid out of mother of pearl. The drawer pulls are all intact and each of the interior drawer fronts has inlay detail too.

The one bamboo is a lovely sitting sparrow design with a slight whimsical aspect and the dragons are traditional Chinese characters with the white dragon being a blank tile. Even the 1 circle is unusual - it has a geometric design rather than the traditional "rose circle" feature. This design would have been quite progressive for its era!

I particularly like the flower tiles in this game as they are lovely examples of the coveted "plant pot" style. They are very detailed and beautifully painted and coupled with the lovely thick bone to bamboo ration have a lovely weight to them during play. There are two fully sequenced flowers each numbered 1-4.

There are a total of 152 tiles with gorgeous thick bone to bamboo ratio "40/60" - 40% bone and 60% bamboo. 152 tiles means this game has all its original tiles (144 playing tiles). Added to these 144 tiles are 8 matching tiles that have been stickered for use as jokers. Because of the added tiles this game can be played with using National Mah Jong League (NMJL) or traditional Chinese rules - the best of both worlds!

Because of the "simple" style character tiles this game is likely from the mid to late 1930's.

This game is from a select portion of my collection and would be a very special addition to anyone's existing or growing collection.

Let me know if I can help with more information.
