Description:

I have been adopted and now have a new home.

This Chinese Bakelite game is called an "owl bam" because of the design of the one bamboo tiles. It is one of the rarer styles of Chinese Bakelite games and is very popular amongst collectors and players.

Chinese Bakelite is a term used to identify this style of game. These games were imported from China and are made of Bakelite - they pass the scrubbing bubbles test for Bakelite. Most of the Chinese Bakelite tiles have a sharper edge to them as this set does.

This game has 8 flowers, 2 sets of fully sequenced bouquets numbered 1-4. The quality of engraving and the detail of the designs are very intricate.

The case is worn but OK condition especially when you consider it has been around for some 60-70 years. The case is missing its handle but both latches do work well. The racks are a beautiful burgundy swirled Bakelite - this is an older style of rack and has magnificent swirl detail. The racks have matching metal E's and tokens are included.

The previous owner has put some flower decals on the racks at the left hand edge next to the tokens - I expect this is to mark which rack belonged to which player. They can be removed but I decided to let the new owner decide whether to keep them or not.

The negative to this game is for some reason the paint has faded on one of the 1 bamboo tiles - I have added a picture of the tile at the end of the slideshow. I am not sure what has happened to the tile but it will need repainting. I know an excellent Mah Jong restorer that will be more than happy to assist in the tile's restoration. The tile is missing its paint but is not damaged in any other way.
